Where Yoga Meets the Living Earth

The ancient yogis did not separate the quest for inner freedom from their relationship with the natural world. The rivers, forests, and seasons were not a backdrop to their practice — they were the practice. Foundations of Eco-Yoga recovers this original unity, revealing how the science of yoga and the science of ecology are two expressions of a single discipline.

This course is your gateway into the MATRI School’s unique approach: understanding that every ethical principle of yoga (the Yamas and Niyamas) is simultaneously an ecological principle, and that genuine sustainability begins not with policy but with the transformation of consciousness.

What You Will Explore

Across eight comprehensive modules, you will journey from the foundational meaning of the word yoga — to unite, to yoke — through to practical daily integration of eco-yogic living. You will study how Patanjali’s ethical precepts map onto modern ecological ethics, how the Upanishadic vision of interconnectedness anticipates systems ecology, and how indigenous wisdom traditions from India and Australia have sustained this understanding for millennia.

This is not a physical asana course. It is a course in perception — learning to see the world, and your place within it, through the integrated lens of yoga and ecology. Theory is balanced with reflection, journaling, and real-world application so that the knowledge moves from intellect into lived experience.

Who This Course Is For

This course welcomes complete beginners to yoga philosophy as well as experienced practitioners who sense that something essential has been lost in modern yoga’s separation from the natural world. No prior knowledge of Sanskrit, philosophy, or ecology is required — only curiosity and a willingness to look deeply.

Course Content

Module 1: What Is Eco-Yoga?
This opening module establishes the foundational vision of eco-yoga — the understanding that yoga and ecology are not separate disciplines but two facets of a single science of interconnection. You will explore the original meaning of yoga, the roots of ecological thinking in ancient traditions, and why reuniting these streams matters now more than ever.

Module 2: The Eight Limbs as an Ecological Map
Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga offers far more than a personal development program. This module reveals how each of the eight limbs — from ethical conduct (yama, niyama) through meditation (dhyana) to absorption (samadhi) — maps onto an ecological understanding of our relationship with the living world.

Module 3: Indigenous Wisdom and Sacred Ecology
Indigenous cultures around the world have maintained an ecological consciousness that modern civilization is only now beginning to rediscover. This module explores the wisdom of Aboriginal Australian land stewardship, Indian indigenous traditions, and how these living knowledge systems complement and deepen the yogic understanding of our relationship with the Earth.

Module 4: The Body-Earth Connection
The human body is not separate from the body of the Earth. This module explores the Pancha Mahabhutas (five great elements), the koshas (sheaths of being), Ayurvedic constitution, and how practices like asana, pranayama, and shatkarma reconnect us with the elemental forces we are made from.

Module 5: Mind, Meditation and the Ecology of Consciousness
The ecological crisis is ultimately a crisis of perception. This module examines how the practices of pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi transform our relationship with reality — dissolving the illusion of separation that lies at the root of both personal suffering and environmental destruction.

Module 6: Food, Water, Fire — The Sacred Elements in Daily Life
Eco-yoga is lived in the everyday. This module brings ancient wisdom into the kitchen, the garden, and the hearth — exploring Ayurvedic nutrition, conscious water use, Vedic fire practices, sustainable food systems, and how the simplest daily acts can become sacred ecological practice.

Module 7: Community, Saṅgha and Collective Ecology
Ecological transformation is never a solo project. This module explores how saṅgha (spiritual community), collective action, and the MATRI portal itself serve as vehicles for the kind of deep change that no individual can accomplish alone. From village commons to digital communities, we examine models of collective ecological stewardship.

Module 8: Living the Practice — Integration and the Path Ahead
The final module brings everything together into a personal eco-yoga practice that you can sustain beyond this course. You will design your own daily practice, articulate your ecological commitments, and explore how the MATRI School's further courses can support your continued growth as a practitioner and steward of the living Earth.
