Mahanirvana Tantra ( Book – PDF) commentary by Hariharananda Bharati edited by Arthur Avalon (print 1989)

The Mahanirvana Tantra is a Sanskrit text that is part of the tantric literature of Hinduism. It is considered one of the important texts within the Tantric tradition and is primarily focused on the worship of the Hindu deity Shiva. The text covers a wide range of topics including rituals, meditation practices, yoga, philosophy, and spiritual insights.

The authorship and exact date of composition of the Mahanirvana Tantra are uncertain. It is believed to have been composed sometime between the 11th and 18th centuries CE, although some scholars suggest an earlier date.

One notable edition of the Mahanirvana Tantra is the commentary written by Swami Hariharananda Bharati, a prominent Indian tantric scholar and teacher, and edited by Sir John Woodroffe, who wrote under the pen name Arthur Avalon. This commentary, titled “Mahanirvana Tantra: Tantra of the Great Liberation,” provides insights, interpretations, and explanations of the text’s teachings. Swami Hariharananda Bharati’s commentary is highly regarded for its depth of understanding and its elucidation of the tantric practices and philosophy contained within the Mahanirvana Tantra.

The edition with the commentary by Hariharananda Bharati and edited by Arthur Avalon was published in the early 20th century, making this edition a significant contribution to the study and understanding of tantric literature in the modern era. It has since become a valuable resource for scholars, practitioners, and enthusiasts interested in the Mahanirvana Tantra and tantric spirituality.
