There are not enough “STARS” that could be award to this remarkable DVD set.

I once thought, “Birds” were for the Birds”, THIS “Life of Birds” DVD set, is truly NOT for the “Birds”, BUT it is for ANY humanbeing that loves and requires the best (almost unbelievable)VISUAL experience possible. The only suggestion I offer, is to make sure you view this on the best “State of the Art” TV that you can afford (or borrow) and you WILL experience a visual experience like none other. It is a 3 disk set and it is about 3 hours of viewing of each disk. If you become affected (mesmerized) as I had been, you would probably want to keep this particular DVD set in a “safedeposit box”, so that you can add an amendment to your “Will”, bequeathing this particular DVD set to those that loved you the most. They may forget about you, but they will never forget the visual experience you have left them.May you have an long life and as long as you live and re-play this DVD set, your life will only be embellished.J.Levin

    Beautiful photography!

As usual, this David Attenborough dvd series holds a plethora of information and beautiful photography. The neat little facts that are uncovered, reveal an awesome insight into understanding birds and nature a little bit more, even if you thought you were pretty well versed on this class of animals.

    Great

Another part of Sir David’s Life series. Once again Sir David and the BBC have produced a fantastic insight into the natural world. As with all his series, this is interesting and enjoyable, with suberb filming, some of the best in the entire series.

    At least 30 “Wows!!!”

If you love birds, nature, or nature photography, this DVD series will do nothing less than overwhelm you with great narrative, truly consuming photography (not to mention the sound editing is awesome) and troves full of information. My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed Sir Attenborough’s magnificent telling of the ‘Life of Birds’ and are actually looking forward to watching the entire series again and again. Even if you are an avid birder, you are sure to discover new species, new habitats, and new facts about bird behaviors that you weren’t aware of before. One of the most rewarding things about these stories are that you may find yourself wondering out-loud, “How did they find out about that???” over-and-over, as we did, to find that they actually take the time to answer those questions at the end of the episode. I’m only here to give credit where it’s due, in my humble opinion, and to order 2 more copies as gifts.

excellent in depth coverage, wide range of species, very informative

An excellent in depth study of birds, their anatomy, how they developed, how they live. DA narrative as always very informative, interesting and pleasant to listen to. Good photography with wide range of birds covered. For those considering buying the “life” collection remember this dvd is also part of the “lie” collection so do not end up with two copies (as I did). Highly recommended.

    Review with Pros & Cons

The Life of Birds (1998) is a BBC nature documentary series written and presented by David Attenborough. Here are the pros & cons of this three-disc set as I see it, I hope this helps you.Pros:1. Overall interesting if you love nature & or birds2. I always find David Attenborough’s voice soothingCons:1. Not the best transfer in quality2. Unfortunately, a bit dumbed down, I would have liked it to be more informative and scientific

    Attenborough sparkles, as always!

David Attenborough is the world’s foremost and probably most well-known wildlife expert. He and his crew go to extraordinary lengths to capture footage of plants, birds, animals, insects, the earth never before seen, in each and every series they create. The resultant photography is always top-notch, the narration by Attenborough always succinct, appealing, and with a dash of under-stated English humor, and the documentaries extremely interesting.Life of Birds is no exception to the above. It is fantastic. The series captures all kinds of birds in live action, eating, mating, drilling, flying, hunting, defending – all with astonishing clarity and precision. You will be wonder-struck at numerous scenes. Attenborough’s narration is on point as always. The material is fresh, informative and crisp. You will find yourself watching the films contained on this 3-DVD set again and again over the years. Very highly recommended.

    The usual zoocentrist speil

OK. I can see that ornithology is a major passion of many people. And botany and evolution a much lesser thrill for folk but for natural history documentaries to spend such little time on these subjects is biased and frustrating. But I so would have loved to see MUCH more about bird evolution and origins! Attenboroughs series on Kew and plants generally rare such shallow treatment compared to this birds series of TEN programs! And he doesn’t half jump about the planet! Why did he have to go to Patagonia to see magellanic woodpeckers?I really was fascinated by the first episode and would have loved to see so much more on this cutting edge subject.

5 star content, 3 star video quality

The series Life of Birds by David Attenborough is thoroughly excellent and engaging. It is among the top nature documentaries I’ve ever watched. The main problem is that the video quality is somewhat poor. They seem to have created the DVD’s from the television version instead of from original high quality footage. Even by 1998 standards, the video quality is poor.

I love watching this, but the picture isn’t the best

I just love DA, so you’re hearing from a fan here. I thoroughly enjoyed The Life of Birds. As I had hoped, this is a fascinating, beautiful introduction to one branch of life, and I was riveted to every moment of it.I deducted one star simply because the quality of the picture was not great. I know that this was produced a while ago, and that is probably why. I had grown accustomed to “Planet Earth” and it’s spectacular picture. I put this dvd into my computer with its new monitor just to make sure it wasn’t my old tv that was the problem, and even there everything looked a little dull, fuzzy, and grainy. Oh well, I guess that’s just the way progress goes! It sure does make it obvious when something was filmed a few years back.Nevertheless, this is a wonderful series and I highly recommend it.

    A treat for bird lovers!

This series originally aired on PBS television about ten years ago as a ten part series. I was unable to record the entire series, so I have always wanted to see it in its entirety. Since I love birds, this was a real treat for me to watch all of the programs on three DVDs. It is really a remarkable series, especially when you consider to what extent the producers went to film in unusual and often remote locations. The slow motion photography showing how birds fly is nothing short of amazing! Considering that this series was filmed several years ago, I was impressed with the color, clarity, and sound of the DVD set. I am very pleased to finally own this wonderful program and will enjoy it for years to come.

Life is creal but it would help if DVD brough a little bit of beauty

This series are very good quality narated but I had a little bitof problem with the subject matter: yes , everything is true but it is very sadand bleak survival of the birds; no artistic effor of making the birds look interesting, beautiful or exotic, no chapter of birds singing or diference of voices in generalwhich could be quite exciting topic to cover. No beutiful music in it as well..It is too scientifically coldly made no passion or effors has been made to invision the birds with admiration and amusement: no hint of beauty in the birds or lyricalattemt to show how special birds are,it is very cold even very trueobservaton. I do not want sugar coated series as well but have a little bit poetrywill help. I saw preview of different series and seeems to me all have the sameattitude : the series are about hardship but the real life has everything ,they try to make you scare as auction film which I try to avoid most of the time.I am sure that it is not only hardship in life but a beauty and music and art of seeing it..Here is everything so intense and sad… even scary. It is very plain reflection of the lifeof birds. Where is the joy in the birds life? I am sure that we do not look at the birds with very narrow cold analitical eyes but we enjoy the birds songs, admire their beauty and grace and colors as fabulous variety :I think the producer should to find differnt appoach to this series.I liked he series but it is too simplistic… The glory , romantic beauty, music of Art of Nature which is exist and made but was not included in this series. So many composers wrote music on this topic. Lay in the grass in the woods in the sunny day and listen the birds!! After make the series..

Awesome birds but video quality need to be updated to HD

After several years I am still in awe contemplation of the many birds presented here. While it’s hard to define a path to create a narrative of the chapters, David Attenborough advances in a rather successful way the wide range of birds existing. As a personal hint, I ‘d devote some more minutes to the macaws and parrots and less to the marine birds, but that is just an opinion in the end.Another drawback might be the quality of the video. If you want to play this on a HD TV, the image will suffer with its 3:4 proportion; blurred images may appear especially on closeups.

If you love birds, you’ll love this.

First off, if I could give it 10 stars, I would. It was all I had hoped for and more. David Attenborough’s ability to get “hands on” experience with most of the birds in the series will make even the most seasoned birder jealous. ;)The camera angles were awesome. Now, my only bad remark about the series. The DVD video quality. It is VHS at best, and looks like a Divx hack of some movie… not that I would know what one would look like.I guess Planet Earth ruined me on really good DVD quality. If this series was to be re-released in real DVD quality or even hi-def I would buy it again. 😉

subject matter: fascinating, video quality: dreadful

I own everything David Attenborough has ever done — I have the utmost respect for his work. Life of Birds is fascinating, well-composed, informative, etc.But the video quality (I have it on DVD) is absolutely dreadful. Grainy and washed out like very early digital video (I wonder if it was shot on digital video to make it easier to get some of the amazing footage he captured). By comparison, the look of Life of Mammals is breathtaking — the composition of shots, color, lighting, and overall vividness is a hundred times better than Life of Birds. It’s quite distracting, and disappointing.

    Amazing, Informative, Mesmerizing… wow.

This is 580 minutes of spectacular footage and riveting narrative. Sir David Attenborough is the supreme nature narrator and the BBC filmmakers are simply brilliant. I couldn’t pull myself away from the screen. To see, up close and in perfect imagery, both the usual and the unusual life of birds, to see the vast range of species, habitats and habits… priceless. Bird behaviour is fascinating, even more fascinating than you can imagine prior to viewing this series. What an amazing world we live in and what a superb job these folks have done to bring us so close to the avian part of God’s creation. Don’t miss it! You’ll want to watch them over and over.

Meticulous, creative and awesome look at nature.

David Attenborough has created an exceedingly meticulous, expansive work, and included a sense of humor, which the birds contribute to in their behavior. The variety of birds, their amazing behavior in the quest to survive, is breathtaking. Whoever did the camera work also needs to be congratulated. There were obviously hours and hours of work, both physically and in terms of research to produce this stunning footage. A magnificent gift for any child, or adult who retains the capacity to feel the awesome gift of divine nature.

We viewed this on VHS years ago and bought the DVD to see this outstanding production from David Attenborough and BBC again. Attenborough’s enthusiastic and knowledgeable narrative is pleasant to listen to and simply fun, as always. Suggest buying Birds of the Gods to go with it. The photography is exceptional. BBC continues to lead all English-speaking media outlets in contributing to the intellectual advancement of and enjoyment of human knowledge.

    Utterly amazing, but…

There is no doubt that this is an amazing series, one of the best actually! I would have voted this 5 stars but I wish the video quality wasn’t so poor. It reminds me of when I had to watch ‘snowy’ TV back in the age of poor analogue signal. This DVD deserves to be seen in clean and clear quality, the footage is too awesome to be this neglected.

    Issues playing old format discs.

I’m sure it’s not the seller’s fault but I’m having trouble getting all discs/episodes to play. Wont play at all in my bluray player (I know, I know) and was only successful getting one episode from the first two discs to play on my laptop, otherwise it says “skipping over damaged area”. I don’t see any damage to the discs, so I’m fairly disappointed. Bought this series because I remember liking it a lot when it was on Netflix 10 years ago. Still trying to figure this out, but I guess the lesson is sometimes you can’t go back.

If you LOVE BIRDS, you’ll LOVE this 3 Disc Collection!

My hubby & I enjoyed watching this three disc dvd collection about the life of birds, which is narrated by David Attenborough. There are ten, roughly fifty-five minute segments, dedicated to specific topics regarding the life of birds around the world….. Some of the topics include finding a mate, building nests and rearing young, to various bird calls/sounds, and the challenges birds face living in extreme environments are just some of the topics discussed. What is captured on film for us to view about the various birds around the world is quite amazing and fun to watch. I enjoyed learning a lot of new and interesting things about birds I never knew before.

    A great documentary

After buying ‘Planet Earth’ and ‘Life’, this was my first choice for what to buy next. It is amazing, especialy for a bird lover like me. It’s nice to have Attenborough actually on the video. Some of the best parts include: (spoiler alert) kakapos booming (courtship call), Aincient Murrelet babies running to the sea, and the weird Calf-bird in the jungle. It’s a great documentary. I give it four stars only because the quality on some of the vids was not great.

    Spectular viewing

For anyone and everyone who has ever watched God’s great creations. The photography and the detail with which it is given to the viewer is breath taking. Wonderful vivid color, close ups so realistic you feel like you could reach out an touch these birds. I wouldn’t have missed this DVD for anything. I am proud to own it and will watch it over and over and then share it with my Grandchildren. There will be many birds and their interactions with each other that my Grandchildren will never see except on this film. The narration is exceptional. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED IT !!!!!!

    BBC always succeeds!

David Attenborough as always is amazing as well as BBC. They always succeed when it comes to documentaries. I am very pleased with this purchase. I gave it 4 stars because as others have said it is fairly grainy in parts; if it comes out on blu-ray I will probably purchase that copy for the better quality image, but otherwise outstanding cinematography and incredible information that will leave you amazed at the variation of birds on the planet.

    A must-have

I love Sir David, and this was the second-to-last dvd I had to get before my collection was complete! I started watching it right away. I get such a kick out of seeing David wandering around with all the birds and exploring. Every time I’ve put in the DVD my roommates start congregating because it’s so interesting. It’s definitely an older series, Life and Planet Earth was spectacular because of the crispness of the images in addition to the content. This series is older, so keep in mind it was great quality for that time. The content is just as good.

  38. M. Hammers

    Great documentory!

I watched these 3 DVDs while on the treadmill (took several different days), and was amazed at the quantity of things I had no clue to when it came to birds. Did you know that there is a bird that can mimic a chainsaw, a car alarm and a camera shutter clicking…and do it so well that if you were lost in the jungle near this bird you would think there were people near by? …and this is NOT a parrot. Many more fascinating things to see in this documentary!

  39. Adam Okie

Good but, videophilies on a budget beware

I was a little disappointed with the quality of video on a few shots. However, any video with David Attenborough is worth the investment, his intrigued and enlightened tone elevates the documentaries beyond downfalls in video quality. For those that love birds, or like being intrigued by the exotic stories of nature this series is a must. If your a collector of Attenborough this is yet another great series. But if you love documentaries because you like hour and hours of stunning photography, this is not at the same quality as other series. Life in the Undergrowth and the Life of Mammals I would recommend if your a discerning videophile. Also beware some upconverting blu-ray players to 120hz and 240hz TVs seem to stutter images from older BBC productions.

i love this dvd boxset and so does my moggy. the similarities between birds and humans in their various behaviours as compared by sir david Attenborough are amazing and a lot of the programmes made me chuckle because of this. I would recommend this dvd set to people of all ages above say 7 years old because it shows birds mating albeit fleetingly, but it would depend on how individuals felt about their children watching something as normal and educating as to where we all come from.

    Life of Birds review

I just loved this documentary! The picture quality is excellent, the birds are amazing, Sir Attenborough is the best. I really enjoy his explanations, and I wonder at his stamina given that he is in his 80s. He doesn’t hesitate to get down onto the ground, or be rappelled up a huge tree in order to explain the creature being filmed.

When this was on TV, my cat got very excited & sat happily purring & watching it – after first circling the TV to see if she could get to the birds. I am not the sort of person who usually buys things for pets, except the usual cat toys but this is something I can put on during Bonfire Night/New Year’s Eve, to distract kitty. Received my DVD. Worked perfectly in my blu-ray player. I do bird counts in the winter and spring for science. So these videos were of interest to me. These DVD answered so many questions for me and then some. Beautiful, informative, and intriguing.

    Lesser repeated TV series?

Much of the content of the three discs I can’t recall having seen before. Perhaps this series is less frequently shown / repeated? Have to agree with the review by L.W., the transfer quality is not great. Don’t know whether some of the footage was shot on film with a large shutter angle contributing to the weird after-outlines to bird wingbeats for example. Good entertainment value for money all the same.

I have never been to a psychiatrist, so I can’t tell you why I like looking at birds. I just do. Even the ones I see on a day-to-day basis make me happy, so seeing the ones I don’t ever get to see and having their behaviour explained, well it is a no brainer.Having seen birds in super high definition (on blu-ray disc) has made me a bit spoilt and I wish they would do it all again – only in the super format. This is the easiest buy you can make – like birds, have a DVD player and are not broke – just get it and watch it over and over…

    Unglaubliche Aufnahmen!

Wer einen Eindruck bekommen möchte, kann mal bei youtube suchen …Episode 1 – To Fly or Not to Fly Episode 6 – Signals and SongsEpisode 2 – The Mastery of Flight Episode 7 – Finding PartnersEpisode 3 – The insatiable Appetite Episode 8 – The Demands of the EggEpisode 4 – Meat Eaters Episode 9 – The Problems of ParenthoodEpisode 5 – Fishing for a Living Epidose 10 – The Limits of EnduranceFür Vogelfreunde, die der englischen Sprache mächtig sind, ein Must-have!

    BBC–3 Disks–Inspiring

There are many good DVD’s about birds, and some more recent than “The Life of Birds”. But, IMO, this is still the best. Get other DVD’s if you want to, but be sure that THIS ONE is in your collection. David Attenborough is at the top of his game, and other than the “millions of years” this and “millions of years” that, the scripting is equal to the amazing footage.

    A captivating story!

Being a teacher we have a year-end theatre for little ones. They play the part of Birds and we wanted to give them the experience of observing these creatures in their natural habitat either in a nature setting in real life or on some form of media. We took them to the Zoo, to the Masoala rainforest where they had an opportunity to see Birds in their natural habitat, albeit the forest was imported fromMadagascar. We watched the video The Life of Birds and the children were delighted and captivated . The video is now doing the rounds in each one’s homes.Highly recommended.
