Description

One hundred and twenty-six paintings by Nicholas Roerich — artist, teacher, archaeologist, explorer and treaty-maker, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize — reproduced in full colour.

  • 126 full-colour plates across 144 pages. A painting on almost every page, each given its title, year and medium.
  • Painted between 1895 and 1931 in tempera, oil, pastel and gouache: Himalayan ranges seen at altitude, Orthodox hermits, Tibetan guardians, Russian saints, and the Mother of the World.
  • Arranged in three movements — The Ascent, The Descent, and No Tension.
  • Includes Madonna Laboris, Signs of Christ, and the St Joan of Arc triptych.
  • The plates are given room to themselves, with their captions and nothing in the way of looking.
  • A companion to the MYST MEGHA MYTH trilogy, and complete on its own.

Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947) led his family across Central Asia between 1925 and 1928, held five months in tents on the Tibetan plateau while they waited for permission to travel on. He designed The Rite of Spring for Stravinsky, founded the Master Institute of United Arts in Manhattan, and gave his name to the Roerich Pact, the first international treaty to protect cultural treasure in wartime. He left some 7,000 paintings. In India he is held as a national figure: his house at Naggar is kept as a museum, and New York keeps another in his name.

8.5 × 8.5 inches. 144 pages. Premium colour throughout.
